Entitled “Bringing the Rio+20 Agenda To Life”, BSDS 2012 spread over two days and discussed concrete ways to extend sustainable actions and partnerships in the context of a multi-faceted, systemic crisis and a renewed global agenda for sustainable development after the Rio+20 Conference of June 2012. The Summit opened with thematic workshops, which were preceded by online discussions open to all stakeholders – the “BSDS Dialogues”. The BSDS Dialogues led into a political dialogue based on some of the recommendations gathered from the participating stakeholders. The Summit concluded with an outreach event discussing key issues in the post-Rio+20 context.
As part of the commitment of the co-organisers to use BSDS as a constructive channel between grassroots stakeholders, experts and policy-makers, the outcomes of the Summit is feeding the on-going consultation process of the European Commission – DG Environment on “Ensuring Sustainable development globally: EU Follow-up to Rio+20”.
Based on this first experience the co-organisers are already working on the next edition of what is now calle dthe European Sustainable Development Summit (ESDS), with the objective to make the Summit a more attractive platform and constructive initiative in our common efforts to build a better and more sustainable world.
